It was late night in segregation. The sounds of prison life were shut down to the bare basics, the gentle hum of the ventilation system, and the occasional sound of a toilet flushing. And the most repetitive sound of all, that of the guard’s rubber-soled shoes pacing up and down the tier, shining a flashlight into each cell, searching for the living, breathing body that needed to be accounted for.

KK was finding it hard to sleep, so he sat up doodling on a piece of paper at a small metal desk situated at the end of the bunk. Although the cell light had been turned off hours ago, KK was still able to make use of the light that snuck in through the cell-door window and fell just right on the corner of the desk. The inconvenience mattered very little. What he was working on was not a very complicated piece of art, just a circle with a few names scattered in and around it.

The toilet next door flushed, startling KK and causing him to lose his focus. He stood up, stretched, and walked over to the beat-up looking metal toilet in his own cell, After relieving himself, he washed his hands and stood staring into the scratched up metal mirror over the sink. He needed to regain his focus so that he could make sense of the drawing. But as he stared into the mirror, a strange picture popped into his head; an older black man with a pistol in his hand stood over Baby Kendall, who sat on the floor playing with his favorite toy, seemingly oblivious to the danger above him.

KK tried to shake the crazy picture from his head, but the man seemed to be playing games, mischievously smiling at KK as he blew on the end of the gun barrel and reached down with his free hand to playfully rub Baby Kendall on top of his head.

When KK finally managed to shake the crazy picture from his head, the question still remained of where it had come from and what it meant. After about fifteen minutes of standing in front of the mirror straining his brain, KK came up with what he believed the answer to be. He walked back over, sat at the table, and picked up his pencil. Just outside of the circle, right next to his own name, he put the name of his father!
